An attorney and small business owner with Auburn ties is mounting a longshot bid to become New York's 57th governor.
Joe Holland is one of three candidates vying for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. In an interview with The Citizen, he referred to himself as "the proven outsider" — a title that recognizes he has never been an elected official but acknowledges his experiences in the private and public sectors.
Holland has been an attorney, real estate developer and small business owner. He opened a Ben & Jerry's store in Harlem with homeless shelter residents as his employees. He operated a homeless shelter and penned two books, including a memoir.
He has added minister and motivational speaker to his resume in recent years.
His experience in government dates back to the 1980s. He was chief counsel for the state Senate's housing committee and became state housing commissioner under Gov. George Pataki, the last Republican to serve as the state's top executive.
