Following a weekend with a record setting audience of over 1,100 for three performances, the South Seneca Falcon Players received eight awards from the Theatre Association of New York State (TANYS) for their production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. This is the most awards received by the Falcon Players since joining TANYS in 2014.
TANYS’ mission is to foster the contribution of theatre to the lives of the citizens of New York State; promote high standards of theatre practice through education and example; and encourage exchanges of information and knowledge through people-to-people and theatre-to-theatre exchanges. It serves Nonprofessional Community Theatre Companies; University and College Theatre Departments; Secondary School Drama Departments; Children’s Theatres and the individuals who support or are an active part of them. The group offers adjudication services to its member organizations, where a trained person experienced in theatre offers objective, constructive feedback to the cast and production team that help the performers and company learn and grow. The adjudicator considers ten factors, including: is the acting believable and technically skillful with effective timing; are the characters well interpreted; does the company display ensemble work; is the concept appropriate for the material and realized by the company; are the movements and stage pictures effective; do the technical elements support the overall production; and total impact. Awards are given for noteworthy achievement and are the same standards whether a production is mounted by a community, college, or high school group.
The award categories are: Meritorious Achievement- Some advanced theatrical skill noted; Excellence- Theatrical skill base not routinely noted in non-professional theatre; and Outstanding Achievement – Theatrical skill base rarely seen in non-professional theatre.

“I knew that we had something special before opening night, but it is always a true joy to have your efforts, time, talents and vision validated by our audience and TANYS. We are honored to receive this recognition from TANYS for our cast and production team. We often joked in the process of building the show that it was truly “a beast” but everyone in our production rose to the challenge, from fork to Beast.” stated Director Tina Coville-Bauder. “I am especially happy for our seniors- Julia, who has been our female lead the past three years and Amber who has played every crazy role we have given her! They have been mainstays of our productions and we will miss them. A huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard to put the production together and to everyone who came to see the show. We set a record this year and are humbled by the support we receive from the community.”
