Auburn school district could possibly cut 28 staff positions in face of deficit

The Auburn Enlarged City School District could cut 28 proposed staff positions.

The cuts were discussed during a board of education meeting Wednesday. The board also approved a 1.58-percent tax levy increase to present to taxpayers for the May 15 budget vote. That levy increase is equal to the district’s tax cap limit given by the state. The district’s total budget will be $76,422,256, up 1.5-percent from the previous year. District Superintendent Jeff Pirozzolo and business manager Lisa Green gave a presentation on the 2018-19 budget before the board’s decision.

A total of 28 positions would be cut, with 14 people being laid off. One teaching assistant and 13 teaching aides would lose their jobs. The eliminated 28 positions are 15 teacher aides, five elementary special education teachers, five general education elementary teachers, one elementary music teacher, one high school social studies teacher and one teaching assistant.
