New York Chiropractic College will not enroll students in its Acupuncture and Oriental medicine degree program this fall.
College officials will then review whether to add the program in the future or end it when current students graduate. The program was added to the curriculum in 2003 with a goal of enrolling at least 100 students in the program to make it financially sustainable.
But enrollment never reached that number and a downward trend has resulted in an unsustainable model.
“At New York Chiropractic College, we are steadfast in our mission to be the leading institution for the education and training of natural health care professionals,” said Dr. Anne Killen, vice president for academic affairs at the Route 89 college. “This decision is a natural expression of our core values of excellence, honesty, accountability and fiscal responsibility in all endeavors, which spur us to ongoing evaluation of our programs, goals and resources.
“We appreciate acupuncture and Oriental medicine’s historical position at the college even as we revisit its strategic role going forward.”
College officials said the decision not to enroll a fall 2018 acupuncture and Oriental medicine class allows the college the opportunity to conduct a full program analysis. Students currently enrolled in the program will be allowed to continue their studies and graduate.
