The Romulus Central School District and Board of Education is opposed to the Circular enerG incinerator, proposed for a piece of property on the former Seneca Army Depot.
Bob McCann, Board of Education President released the statement, which said ‘risk to students’ was a primary concern.
The Board of Education is the latest to go ‘on the record’ opposing the incineration facility, which is now being considered by a New York State Siting Board. The process includes state representatives making a decision on the proposal due to the volume of energy that the waste-to-energy facility will create.
Opponents of the proposal, which includes a long list of local and regional governing bodies say placing such a facility within 3,000 feet of a K-12 school would be a mistake. Those opponents have also voiced concerns with the Siting Board process, pointing out that a decision in Albany does not have to run in coordination with local laws or zoning.

“The Romulus Central School District and Board of Education have been monitoring the developments related to the proposed incinerator project. A project such as this could affect multiple aspects of operating a public school district. While we strongly support and encourage economic development within our district, the safety and well-being of our students, staff and community are of paramount importance to us. Our beliefs do not allow us to support the proposed incinerator project, which would pose significant risk to students, staff, and the families of our community.”
