Sheriff: Wolcott teen possessed hunting firearm on school grounds

Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts says an 18-year-old Wolcott resident was arrested for possessing a firearm on school property at the North Rose-Wolcott High School.

Virts says the School Resource Officer received information that a student at the high school was overheard talking about hunting and having ‘something’ in his vehicle. It was later determined that Kyle Slyter, 18, of Wolcott possessed a shotgun and ammunition for the purpose of hunting inside his vehicle.

The firearm and ammo were both recovered and secured by the School Resource Officer without incident.

Virts says the incident is not connected to a threat in any way, but the mere possession of a shotgun on school property is a crime.

Slyter was charged with criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, and issued an appearance ticket to answer the charge.
