Temporary shift back to winter as light accumulation expected on Thursday

Light snow and ice accumulations are possible for the Southern Tier on Thursday, as colder air works into the region.

While the Finger Lakes enjoyed 60+ degree weather for two straight days — it’s back to ‘reality’ for at least one — as the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for some of the region.

In the Finger Lakes, the Winter Weather Advisory is active for Yates, Tompkins, Cortland, Steuben, and Schuyler counties. Upwards of 3-4 inches of snow are expected for these locations, but with the addtiion of possible icing – an advisory was activated.

Here’s the latest from FLX Weather Meteorologist Drew Montreuil:

– A little freezing rain could mix, but most of the precipitation should remain wet snow.

– Heavier precipitation will fall across the Southern Tier, while northern parts of the Finger Lakes will see very little, or no accumulation at all.

– The snow will quickly taper off between 3 and 4 p.m.

– On Friday, temperatures will rise into the 40s for most of the region, spurring any precipitation that falls to be rain.

– The weekend looks similar at this point, with rain and warmer-than-normal temperatures expected throughout.
