Thunder in January?
The National Weather Service says that if you live in Western New York and heard thunder early this morning — you’re not alone. “Warm temperatures coupled with a strong low pressure system enabled thunderstorms to move across Ohio and Pennsylvania overnight, and into Western New York early this morning. The purple plus and minus symbols overlaid on the attached loop indicate detected cloud-to-ground lightning strikes,” explained the National Weather Service on Facebook.
They say that the risk for thunder is effectively over, but that more rain would be likely throughout the day on Tuesday.
The region was expected to get between a half- and three-quarters of an inch of rain during this system, which presented some minor flooding concerns. While the rainfall itself wasn’t nearly as heavy as the region saw last week — it was combining with snowmelt, which prompted ice jam concerns.
The National Weather Service says that most rainfall will occur this morning, with scattered showers possible throughout the rest of the afternoon. They say that temperatures will rise into the mid-40s, with some locations hitting 50-degrees.
Temperatures will turn colder on Wednesday, with highs throughout the region slipping back to more-ordinary ranges.
