Ithaca College and its new president — she joined the school only last year — have spent the past week dealing with a publicity storm following the publication of a detailed report on the president’s 2001 charge of misdemeanor sexual abuse.
President Shirley Collado faced the charge of one count of misdemeanor sexual abuse in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia for allegedly touching a patient’s clothed breast with sexual intent. Collado pleaded nolo contendere, or not contest, to the charge and was sentenced to 18 months of supervised probation and 80 hours of community service.
At the time, Collado was a 28-year-old psychologist at The Center at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington, where she treated the accuser. According to the documents, what began as a mutual attraction between doctor and patient escalated when the patient found herself without housing in 2000. Collado offered to let her stay in her home, as Collado was on a leave of absence from the center following the suicide of her husband, and the patient had been discharged from the center.
