BEYOND THE FENCE: A step back in time at former depot

A bit south of the former township of Kendaia on Route 96A, a small rest stop curves off amid trees and field. Many travelers pass it by without thought, heading either south toward Ovid or north toward Sampson State Park, Deer Haven Park, or beyond.

If one cared to venture, however, one would encounter a sense of timelessness here. The breeze shares a caress and the silence is so complete that to give it due respect rises above the written word. Gazing over the adjacent landscape, it’s as if the countryside wills to tell its story.

Sitting impenetrably erect on this small parcel rests an impressive monument highlighting the Sullivan Expedition of 1799, just one of the many upheavals to occur here over the centuries. The vast acreage between Seneca and Cayuga lakes hosts much bounty, nurturing and growth, but also past controversy, conflict, and abandonment.
