Brief ‘thaw’ underway in the FLX as weekend forecast remains uncertain

A short-term ‘January Thaw’ is underway in the Finger Lakes.

While forecasters are quick to point out that the calendar only says early-January — they remain split on what the long-term forecast looks like. While some meteorologists, like those with Accuweather, say that temperatures will largely remain above average for a significant chunk of the winter — local meteorologists are less-confident.

FLX Weather Meteorologist Drew Montreuil said last week in a special Weather Center Report during the winter storm that put the deep freeze on the Finger Lakes that a significant pattern change was coming. He eluded to the possibility that temperatures could be ‘above normal’ more-frequently than they will be below over the next few weeks.

Here are the big takeaways from what meteorologists around the region are saying for the remainder of the week:

– The weather will be rather tame on Tuesday with a couple morning flurries followed by increasingly sunny skies, according to Montreuil. A brief shot of lake enhanced snow will be a possibility for some during the morning hours, but will not hinder traffic, nor will it accumulate.

– It will cool off tonight, as skies clear and winds subside, but temperatures will soar, passing 40 degrees on Wednesday.

– Thursday will likely be the choice day of the week, with high temperatures in the low-50s, or at the very worst, upper-40s. That day will also be dominated by sunshine, which will add to the warming trend.

– Montreuil says that things will change on Friday and Saturday. He called it a ‘very active’ period for local weather, and noted that a pair of storm systems will complicate the forecast. However, temperatures should hold at least in the mid-40s on Friday, which remains significantly above ‘average’.

– He says that rain, snow, or even significant icing is possible in the second weather system on Saturday, but with the amount of uncertainty that remains — it’s too early to predict specifics.
