Casella Waste Systems has completed construction of a second new trash disposal cell at the Ontario County Landfill.
The new cell is part of a 43.5-acre expansion of the 389-acre landfill approved by the state Department of Environmental Conservation in January 2016.
The expansion calls for construction of several new cells within the existing footprint of the landfill, plus the addition of a 40-acre soil borrow area to the south on land purchased from a private owner and put under control of the town of Seneca.
In announcing the new cell’s completion, Casella officials said the company has submitted the construction certification report to the DEC and anticipates approval to begin using the cell in the next few weeks.
A large section of litter netting has been re-installed along the eastern edge of the property to keep blowing trash contained to the Routes 5&20 site.
Casella officials also said the company is continuing to add additional soil to the western slopes and building storm water controls, such as swales, down chutes and check dams. Officials said these steps should stabilize the slope and allow the planting of grass in the spring. That work will continue until inclement weather forces them to stop.
