As news of Matt Horn’s departure as city manager spreads, those who’ve worked with him since 2007 are calling it a big loss for the city.
Horn announced Friday that he has accepted a job with a not-for-profit consulting firm in the Washington, D.C. area. His last day on the job at City Hall will be Jan. 12.
City Comptroller Adam Blowers said Horn has an ability to inspire employees when it comes to the city Geneva.
“Matt recruited me to work in city government after we became acquainted through mutual friends,” he said. “I was working as an accountant at Phelps Sungas, which is owned by my aunt and uncle, and he recruited me to be deputy city comptroller under Eddie George.”
He began as deputy comptroller in May 2010 and moved up when George retired a few years ago.
“I was born and raised here and Matt came here from out of the area and inspired me to think of Geneva for what it could become and not take it for granted as just my hometown,” Blowers said.
Sage Gerling, the city’s director of neighborhood initiatives, agreed. She worked as a consultant in the city in 2009 before being hired.
