New York State Thruway preps for winter with new weather stations, GPS on plows

The New York State Thruway Authority is gearing up for winter, outfitting all of its plows with GPS devices and erecting a dozen real-time weather stations.

The installation of GPS units on the plows will "not only provide improved real-time reporting of conditions, it will enhance our response to keep roads driveable and ensure motorists are kept safe," said authority Acting Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll in a news release.

The GPS system will have on-board sensors to report pavement and air temperatures, and tell Thruway officials which sections of the 570-mile highway have been plowed. The units will be installed on all 235 heavy-duty plows by the end of the year, the release said.

The authority will spend $360,000 for the GPS system through a three-year contract with AT&T, said Thruway spokesman Jonathan Dougherty.
