Skaneateles CEO says employee tried to extort him to hide her $89,000 embezzlement

A Skaneateles business owner said in court today that a former employee tried to extort him when he learned of her $89,000 embezzlement.

David Rossi, chief executive officer of Empire of Empire Technical Associates, gave a statement at the sentencing of his former employee Julie McGinn.

McGinn admitted in September to stealing $89,000 from Empire. At her plea hearing, she paid back the money she stole.

She was sentenced today to 16 weeks in jail by Onondaga County Court Judge Gordon Cuffy.

Cuffy called the embezzlement a violation of the trust McGinn had built with a company that was "like family" to her over her 10 years of employment.

Rossi said to call it "tragic" was an understatement. He and two other employees outlined what they described as a betrayal.
