Original Story
The Finger Lakes is going to run the risk of seeing thunderstorm development during the afternoon hours — that packs quite a punch.
The main period of concern will be between 1 pm and 9 pm. Damaging winds in excess of 70 mph, potential for isolated tornadoes, as well as quarter-sized hail are all possible, according to the National Weather Service.
In a media briefing Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service says that confidence was growing — and had reached moderate levels. “Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected along and ahead of an approaching cold front this afternoon through evening,” the NWS said. “This may turn out to be one of our bigger events of the year.”
In addition to damaging winds, heavy rains with these storms could pack a serious punch. Urban and small stream flooding, as well as isolated flash flooding with be possible in these storms.
The airmass that the region experiences on Tuesday ahead of the cold front will be some of the hottest, and most-humid weather the region has seen to date this summer. This will increase the potency of the storms, and allow for better development of storms as they move into the Finger Lakes.
Those looking to do some outdoor activity today, should be careful – especially during the afternoon hours.
