Once or twice a week, Matthew Kasulke enters the operating room at Auburn Community Hospital, dressed in scrubs. The general surgeon performs between two and four surgeries a day, surgeries that tend to focus anywhere between the breast bone and the groin area. That could mean an appendix or gallbladder removal, breast surgery or colon surgery.
Coming from medical school to the operating table, he’s learned, is a completely different world.
“In an anatomy book, people are learning about surgery,” he said. “It’s all very crystal clear because there are cartoons or diagrams drawn where the artery is red and the vein is blue. But often in real life, the tissues, they don’t look that distinct, so any tools that enable those tissues to look distinct helps with the surgery.”
The latest instrument in the hospital’s toolbox to help surgeons like Kasulke do just that is a new imaging system. It’s called the VISERA 4K Ultra High-definition Imaging System and with a large-screen monitor with four times the resolution of HD, Kasulke is finding that performing his work is much easier.
