Seneca County Committee weighs tax, environmental issues in sale of former tire property

The key to a potential private sale of the former Calkins Tire Co. property at 84 Auburn Road in Seneca Falls hinges on two things.

One is how much of the roughly $180,000 in unpaid back taxes, dating back to 2003, Seneca County is willing to waive.

The other is whether a prospective new owner will clean up any environmental issues on the property.

The Finance, Assessment & Insurance Committee of the Board of Supervisors met in special session Thursday to consider the matter.

The 5.5-acre property is owned by Jim Tydings of Seneca Falls. Built originally as the site of the B. E. Wright beer distributorship, it was later bought by Tydings and converted to Calkins Tire Co., a retail tire operation.
