A Democrat plans to run in 2018 for the New York 23rd Congressional District seat held by Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning.
Rick Gallant, 59, of Painted Post, Steuben County, announced his intentions this week. This is his first bid for public office.
Gallant has taught in the Corning-Painted Post School District for 17 years, most recently as coordinator of the district’s home teaching center.
He is a past president of the Corning Teachers Association and has been twice elected to the New York State United Teachers board of directors, where he represents Southern Tier school districts between Chautauqua and Chemung counties, an area largely mirroring Reed’s district.
Gallant’s top priorities include families, education, jobs and health care, he said this week.
