A new report from the National Safety Council details the growing toll opioids are taking in New York State as well as most of the nation.
Accidental poisoning, mainly due to prescription opioids, was the leading cause of unintentional death in New York State in 2015, according to a new report from the National Safety Council. It was the third year in a row that poisoning led falls and motor vehicle crashes.
New York was among 24 states and the District of Columbia in which poisonings represented the largest share of unintentional deaths. This happened even as the state had the second-lowest overall rate of deaths caused by unintentional injuries. New York’s rate of 30.1 per 100,000 deaths trailed only Maryland, at 28, and was ahead of California, at 30.4.
