Owasco preps for blue-green algae water treatment system

While the city of Auburn will be using a powder activated carbon system to treat potential blue-green algae toxins in the water from Owasco Lake this summer, the town of Owasco will be taking a different approach.

Town Supervisor Ed Wagner said the water treatment plant will incorporate granular activated carbon instead.

The reason for not using powder? Wagner said the distance between the town’s intake pipe and its treatment facility is much shorter than the city’s. The city will have about a mile and a half of contact time between the raw Owasco Lake water and the powder activated carbon to be treated and settle out.
