The first floor of the new National Women’s Hall of Fame is targeted to open in 2018.
However, for that to happen, NWHF officials say monetary supporters big and small is needed to push the project over the finish line. The total price tag to renovate the old Seneca Knitting Mill into the new home of the NWHF could end up costing $25 million to $30 million.
Nearly $1.5 million has been raised so far, and more than $4.8 million has arrived by way of federal and state grants.
“To do this huge a project, we need help from everyone who supports our mission and local history,” said local resident Jeanne Giovannini, who chairs the committee heading the project.
Giovannini and NWHF co-president Betty Bayer of Geneva recently conducted a tour of the iconic limestone structure on the south side of the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. They emphasized that it’s not just any old historic canalside mill. It’s one of the last remaining buildings of its kind on a New York waterway, a rare surviving example of American Industrial Revolution mill architecture.
