Tompkins County Legislatures vote to raise tobacco purchasing age to 21

Tompkins County will raise the age of purchasing tobacco to 21.

On Tuesday night, legislators voted 9-5 in favor of raising the tobacco purchasing age from 18 to 21, according to the Ithaca Times.
Proponents of the new law said raising the tobacco age will make it harder for teenagers to get cigarettes. However, others argued that 18-year-old’s are legally adults in many other matters.

Under the law, cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, liquid nicotine, and smoking paraphernalia can only be purchased by those 21 years of age and older.
