A Waterloo man is trying to convince the state Department of Transportation to install signs warning motorcyclists along a 24-mile stretch of state highways from Junius to Wolcott.
Bill Evans said the stretch of road was damaged during the winter. A farm implement called a chisel plow was being towed in the eastbound lane of Route 318. Due to an apparent soft tire, the point of the chisel plow came in contact with the road surface and cut a groove into the asphalt large enough to potentially cause motorcyclists to lose control of their bikes.
Chris Covert, Seneca County’s resident engineer for the state DOT, referred questions to the Region 3 office in Syracuse. Gene Cilento of the Region 3 office said he was unaware of the situation and would have to get more information before responding.
“The damage begins in the eastbound lane of Route 318 just east of Mills Road in Junius,” Evans reported. “It weaves back and forth, continuing east across Route 414 at Magee Corners in Tyre and to the intersection of (Route) 318 and Routes 5&20.”
