Ithaca attorney pleads guilty after being accused of planting drugs

An Ithaca attorney accepted a plea deal on Monday after facing accusations that he may have planted drugs or drug-like substances into a Tompkins County legislator's vehicle while it was parked at the Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport in February 2016.

Jeff Butcher pleaded guilty to felony first-degree attempted perjury in exchange for a three-year conditional discharge and an order of protection for Legislator Mike Sigler, R-Lansing, court documents stated.

Authorities said Butcher allegedly planted a white powdery substance, an orange powdery substance, orange and pink pills, a green leafy substance that had the appearance of marijuana, pornography and bottles of alcohol in Legislator Mike Sigler's car when he was on vacation in Florida with his daughter. After planting the items, Butcher called law enforcement to report the drugs.
