If members of the Ontario County Board of Supervisors didn’t have a basic knowledge of the county landfill before the last month or so, they do now.
During a workshop dubbed “Landfill 102” before Thursday night’s board meeting, three representatives from Casella Waste Systems — which operates the site off Routes 5&20 in the town of Seneca — spent about an hour presenting an overview of operations. At the board’s meeting three weeks ago, supervisors attended a related session — called “Landfill 101” — that largely dealt with Casella’s operations management lease, financial benefits to the county and the economics of the landfill.
Larry Shilling, the landfill’s acting general manager and Casella’s vice president of development in western New York, said there were hundreds of “dumps” in upstate New York until the Department of Environmental Conservation developed regulations and many of them were shut down. There are now 27 municipal solid waste landfills in the state.
