HUD’s ultimatum could jeopardize renovations at Courtyard, Elmcrest, St. Francis senior housing

A federal agency is threatening to reject a move that would place two city housing complexes into a different federal program, allowing the Geneva Housing Authority to secure money for needed renovations.

The housing classification changeover also would allow the agency to convert a former Catholic school into senior housing.

Now, officials from the GHA are asking their Washington legislators to intervene.

A letter sent earlier this month from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development informed Andy Tyman, the housing authority’s executive director, that the agency had 30 days to complete a financing plan for the projects. The Elmcrest Apartments project, combined with the former St. Francis School project, is expected to cost about $10 million, while the Courtyard Apartments work is estimated at $8 million to $10 million, Tyman said.
