To illustrate the importance of a community-wide effort to improve Geneva schools, Superintendent Trina Newton pointed to four young Geneva students standing to her left who are set to graduate in 2026.
“What you see before you is the future,” said Newton at a special Geneva 2020 breakfast gathering Thursday morning at the Ramada Geneva Lakefront, where district officials reported a nearly 20 percent rise in graduation rates over the last five years. “We want every single one of these folks to graduate on time.”
Had the district remained in the spiraling path it was on back in 2010 — graduation rates hovered around 70 percent, and the district was on a state watch list because of its deficiencies — one of those four youngsters might not be on that stage to receive a diploma nine years from now, she suggested.
