The anonymous Aug. 27 911 call to Tompkins County Sheriff's deputies was the second they fielded about Justin Barkley that day. The first was from his mother, to check on his welfare. The second call was coupled with a vague warning and, as a deputy later reported: insistence that Barkley was "not a bad guy."
Barkley's mother had called on authorities late Aug. 27 to check on her son, who had allegedly gotten into a scuffle a day earlier with a store clerk in Lansing. When deputies obtained more information from a second 911 caller, sheriff's records say, the caller told them Barkley, a Dryden resident, "is severely mentally ill and has said anyone who comes to his house will be shot."
This was the latest in a series of incidents between Barkley, 38, and law enforcement in Tompkins County.
