The aging population regionally and nationally has altered the approach to housing.
While single-family homes for young families provide a good portion of housing starts in the nation, a growing focus is centered on the needs of baby boomers either approaching or already enjoying retirement. Senior housing has been identified as a need in just about every community in the Finger Lakes. Most of the time, though, the answer has been apartment-style housing or congested townhouse developments.
Mike Colacino said not every senior wants that type of housing — and he’s set out to create single-family housing designed with seniors in mind. “What I’m doing is very unique and centering on that particular clientele,” said Colacino, who owns Morchaela Properties. “You’re still coming to Jack and Mary’s house, not a complex.”
