At City Council’s annual retreat, Mayor Ron Alcock announced his intention to recognize residents and neighborhoods who elect to participate in an expanded resident engagement effort in 2017 and beyond.
The Mayor’s Institute for Citizen Engagement will recognize those residents who enroll and complete each of the three citizen engagement programs currently offered by the City of Geneva. The City’s original program, Citizens Police Academy, has hosted three sessions, and will offer its fourth this fall. New this year are a Citizens Planning Academy and Citizen’s Finance Academy (Budget Bootcamp). Residents who have completed all three opportunities will be recognized as fellows in the Mayor’s Institute.
“The City’s Comprehensive Plan charges us with leveraging the creativity and expertise of all of our residents in moving Geneva toward her vision,” said Mayor Alcock. “These programs are our way of ensuring that residents have the most complete understanding of our program strengths and the challenges facing Geneva, so that they may be ready to support us as we work toward our vision.”
The Citizens Planning Academy begins in February, and registration has been closed. Registration for the Finance Academy will commence in the next several weeks, with courses beginning in the spring. The Citizens Police Academy is scheduled for later this fall, with registration opening in late summer.
For admission into the Mayor’s Institute, a resident need only complete all three courses; each of which is scheduled to be offered annually. There is no time constraint within which to complete the courses.
At the neighborhood level, neighborhoods who sustain at least one resident each year in each academy will earn and retain the designation “Mayor’s Institute Neighborhood.”
