Chinese New Year has deep cultural roots

As Yuan Yuan started talking about Chinese New Year traditions with visitors at the Geneva Public Library, she became emotional.

“The more I know about Chinese New Year, the more I feel homesick,” she said.

Yuan, who teaches Mandarin Chinese at Geneva Middle School and North Street Elementary, told her audience that to the Chinese, celebrating the new year is akin to celebrating Christmas here. It is an important family time filled with meaningful traditions. Worldwide, Chinese people began celebrating the Year of the Rooster yesterday.
