Ontario County woman charged with welfare fraud, received $11K in illegal benefits

A 35-year-old woman who is currently being held at the Ontario County Jail on unrelated charges was arrested for welfare fraud on September 13th, according to deputies.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reports that Monique Barrette-Lewis, 35, of Hopewell was arrested for welfare fraud in the third degree and two counts of offering a false instrument in the first degree.

The arrest stems from an investigation, which revealed that Barrette-Lewis did file two applications for services in September 2015 and April 2016 that contained false information concerning her income. She indicated that she was not employed at the time when actually was employed as a home health care aid and cleaning homes.

She also failed to properly report the income she received from unauthorized withdrawals from one of her employer’s bank accounts. The result of her failing to properly report this income resulted in a larceny of $11,214.03 from the Ontario County Department of Social Services.

Barrette-Lewis was arraigned in Hopewell Town Court and committed to the Ontario County Jail without bail. The case was referred to County Court where she will answer the charges at a later date.
