The “bully of the water world,” has made its way to Cayuga County. Hydrilla was spotted earlier this month on Cayuga Lake in Aurora by the Cayuga Lake Floating Classroom participants on Sept. 13.
Hilary Mosher, coordinator for the Finger Lakes Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management, nicknamed the plant that multiplies as it’s cut. It grows vertically to the surface, and then horizontally creating a dense swath difficult to remove. It’s growth blocks sunlight, decreases oxygen levels and chokes out other species.
