Big first inning lifts Pilots over Victor

Newark never trailed in this one after a huge first inning put them ahead 7-1. The Pilots used a doubled, a sac bunt, and a sac fly to score their 1st run of the game. Now with 2 outs in the inning, the next 7 Pilots in a row reached base and 6 of them scored. A hit by pitch, two singles, another hit by pitch, and a walk scored 2 runs and left the bases loaded for Kevin Biondic (University of Maryland), who quickly unloaded the bases with a grand slam home run.Victor would score a run in the bottom of the inning on a Brady Acker (George Mason University) single.The RailRiders would go on to score 1 run in each the 5th and 6th before threatening again in the 8th. Even Fernandez (Jacksonville University) got the inning started with a 1 out single before Nolan Shultz (Universiry of Rochester) and Matt Fallon (Black Hawk College) reached on a hit by pitch and walk respectively. On the final pitch of Fallon’s at bat, the 4th ball ended up being a wild pitch that allowed Fernandez to score. Chris Kemp (Indiana University South East) then appeared to be hit by a pitch, but was called back to the box as the umpire determined he did not make a legitimate attempt to move out of the way of the baseball. Kemp was later retired, as was the next batter, and the treat was ended.Newark would add 2 insurance runs in the top of the 9th to win the ball game by a final score of 9-4.Patrick Ryan (Iona College) got his first win of the season for Newark after pitching 6.0 innings of 6 hit ball and allowing 3 runs.Vinny Martin (Iona) picked up the save for the Pilots after throwing 1.2 perfect innings with a strikeout.Evan Fernandez finished the game with 3 hits, including a homer in the 6th, and 2 runs scored. Mark Martin (Le Moyne College) had two hits and 2 runs score for the Pilots.The RailRiders finish out their 3-day home stand tomorrow, with a 5PM game against the Albany Dutchman at Victor High School.
