Penn Yan woman stole upwards of $40K from business through falsifying records

The Penn Yan Police Department reports the arrest of a 61-year-old Flynn Road resident on felony grand larceny charges after an investigation into thousands of missing dollars.

Jo Ann Gilbert, 61, of Penn Yan was arrested after her employer notified police that a large sum of money was missing. Police say Gilbert would take money out of the cash register during each of her shifts and then attempt to cover up the crime by tampering with the cash register and computer inventory management system.

The investigation revealed that Gilbert voided cash transactions and stole $5,889 over a period of eight months. Police say she would also delete cash sales out of the cash register and inventory management system, which revealed between $30,000 and $40,000 was missing in total.

She was charged with third-degree grand larceny, falsifying business records and computer tampering. She was arraigned in Penn Yan Village Court and will reappear at a later date.
