Little Red redemption: Ithaca beats Corning for title

Ithaca had gone 25 years since its last sectional title in boys basketball before Saturday night’s 65-56 Class AA victory over Corning at Corning-Painted Post High School.

The connection to that 1992-93 Little Red team was much closer than 25 years would indicate. As Ithaca coach Brian Stone talked about his team’s triumph, a few feet away stood his dad, John Stone, who guided the Little Red to three straight sectional championships from 1991 to 1993.

This title didn’t come easy. Ithaca lost twice late in the regular season before regrouping to beat Elmira in a tiebreaker for the Little Red’s second straight Southern Tier Athletic Conference West title. Saturday’s win came on the home floor of a team that denied Ithaca a sectional championship, 78-74, last year in the title game thanks to a late rally.
