Lyons High School presents “Radium Girls”
Friday, November 4, 2016 - Monday, November 7, 2016
The Lyons High School students are busy in their last week of rehearsals with the play, “Radium Girls” by DW Gregory. The play will be show on the Earl Buchanan stage in the Lyons High School auditorium Nov. 4-6.
“Believe me, this play raises the bar for our high school play productions,” said director Larry Ann Evans who went on to say, “Mostly I have directed these students in comedies when they were in middle school and high school. This play is not slapstick comedy, nor does it have dazzling effects, but rather these actors are doing something so simple but so powerfully profound.”
In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who are painted them are told to point up their brushes using their mouths and began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer played by MaKayla Mayo, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, played by Seth Nesbitt, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses and ultimately death among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Written with warmth and humor, Radium Girls is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece featuring a great ensemble cast including Melanie Higgins, Alyssa Larkin, Cierra and Ericka Moody, Holden Nesbitt, Eleanor Owen, Shayla Prosser, Anthony Sloane, Zaina Tack, Caitlin Vanduyne and Alexis West. The stage manager is Hunter Schleede, costumes are done by Paula Mayo, sets by Dan Nesbitt, lights are designed by Garret Coons, light board op is Cameron Bowser, and sound by Alex Calvo.
Radium Girls will be presented at the Lyons High School on November 4 & 5 at 7:30pm and November 6 at 2:00pm. Tickets are $10 adults and $5 seniors/students and are available for resale at Dobbins Drugs on William Street in Lyons and at the box office the nights of the show.
