DANCING AND DESSERT WITH THE CONTRADICTIONS
Sunday, January 26 @ 12:30 am - 4:30 am$5 – $12
Saturday 25 January, dancing 7:30-11:30 pm; dessert potluck 10:30 pm
CSMA (Community School of Music and Arts), 330 E. State Street/ML King, Jr. St., Ithaca, NY
A feast of music, dancing, friends, and fabulous desserts are all part of the delectable “Dance and Dessert Potluck” hosted each winter by Hands Four Dancers of Ithaca. Contra dancing (7:30-10:30 pm) will be followed by a dessert potluck and couples dances: swing, schottisch, hambo, waltz, and possibly tango (10:30-11:30 pm). Step lively and you just might balance your caloric intake and output! Music is by the witty, high-energy Contradictions: Tim Ball on fiddle, Rick Manning on fiddle and mandolin, Tom Hodgson on guitar, Dave Davies on brass, Harry Aceto on bass. Their irresistible harmonies and imaginative, hot rhythms will drive winter away, at least for one night. They’re revered by dance-goers at the Flurry, Dawn Dance, Ashokan, and their home base in Ithaca for tight playing and a peppy, eclectic mix of New England, Appalachian and Irish jigs and reels, bluegrass, driving French Canadian tunes, lilting Swedish dances, 1930s and Texas swing, and sophisticated Venezuelan tango-waltzes. The steps are simple and each dance will be taught by a panoply of talented local callers: Vikki Armstrong, Karen Casey Carr, Pamela Goddard, Katy Heine, and Nancy Spero.
Beginners of all ages are always welcome. No need to bring a partner, but please bring clean, soft-soled shoes and a dessert (or savory treat) to share. Hot beverages will be provided. Info: www.hands4dancers.org. Admission: $9 HFDI members; $12 nonmembers; $5 students; children 12 and under free.
