Deputies say they responded to a crash involving a garbage truck on State Route 96 in the Town of Manchester on Saturday around 9:20 a.m.
A Casella Refuse Truck was traveling on State Route 96 when an equipment failure on the truck caused the rear axle to separate from the 2008 truck. This caused the drive shaft to come apart and the rear of the truck to lift off the ground – slamming back down onto the pavement.
The vehicle came to rest in the westbound lane, according to deputies. They say no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Members of the Clifton Springs Fire Department and Finger Lakes Ambulance responded to the scene.
The driver, identified as 50-year-old Mario Vega, of East Rochester was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital. The passenger, identified as 21-year-old Austin Donohue, was transported to Clifton Springs Hospital for a knee injury.
The highway was shut down for approximately two hours, according to deputies.
No tickets were issued.
