Jamylette Santiago suffered a gruesome leg injury last year. She says it still hurts when she walks.
“My knee actually bent the opposite direction when the injury happened,” she says.
On January 2, she will finally begin physical therapy. But she says doctors fear she may have permanent damage that will require surgery. The cost of that has worried Santiago.
“Not everyone is made of money, so it will be very difficult to afford something I really need,” Santiago says.
Not knowing the price of a procedure gives her fear that she won’t be able to afford it.
“Stuff like this can get really expensive,” she says.
A new federal regulation might be able to help. Starting on January 1, hospitals will be required to show their prices online – comparing things like surgery and drug treatments.
