Webster community, firefighters mark sixth anniversary of firefighter ambush

Driving down Lake Rd. in Webster never gets easier for firefighters like Al Sinkiewicz.

“You drive by the scene down there, and you can’t help but flash back to what happened that day,” he said.

He’s talking about the Christmas Eve tragedy in 2012, when a man set his own home on fire, and later shot at first responders.

“It was so out of the norm, so out of context,” he said.

West Webster Volunteer firefighters Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, and Michael Chiapperini, 43, were killed. Firefighters Joseph Hofstetter and Ted Scardino were injured.

On Monday, firefighters and community members gathered once again to mark the sixth anniversary of that tragic day. Near the site, a memorial for the pair continues growing, as friends, family, and fellow first responders pay their respects.

The events of that day quickly became a lesson of the new dangers first responders can face while on the job.
