Schoharie victims remembered on first Christmas since limo crash

The remnants and pain felt from the Schoharie limo crash has become the new normal for the Apple Barrel Country Store.

The store is the backdrop of the deadliest transportation accident in nearly a decade. Owner Jessica Kirby says this holiday season, the growing memorial made her realize how deep this crash cut into the town.

“I feel closer to people that three months ago, four months ago were complete strangers,” Kirby said.

The memorial now has holiday wreaths strewn about it, with notes and well wishes for each of the 20 victims. Kirby says her employees are to thank for that. She says her staff looks at themselves as stewards of the crater sized crash site, that still has tire tread marks embedded in the ground.

“Every day that we’re open, we have customers that go to the store, but then they still visit the memorial,” Kirby said.
