W-FL THURSDAY: Pitifer’s Posse rolls past Devils for first Waterloo win over Mynderse since 2007

Thursday night’s girls & boys basketball doubleheader between crosstown rivals Mynderse and Waterloo had been highly anticipated in the days leading up to the showdown at Waterloo High School. The girls teams both are competing in Section V’s Class B2 division and were evenly matched on paper. The Waterloo boys were coming off a big win at Newark and was looking to beat Mynderse for the first time since 2007, a 22 game losing streak. First year coach Mark Pitifer had not made his desire to end that streak a secret and even made it a point of emphasis in his first team meeting with parents before the season began.

FingerLakes1.com Sports was live streaming the double-header with Dave Barnick, Nick Sciotti and Mike Alessio on the call…

In the opener, the Waterloo Lady Indians took advantage of multiple missed Mynderse layups with hot shooting from beyond the arc and an impressive 20 point effort from sophomore McKenzie Barber to defeat their neighboring rival 57-39.

The gymnasium at Waterloo was filled to capacity with nearly 1,000 in attendance prior to the tip of the boys Finger Lakes East contest. The Waterloo pep band filled the northeast corner of the bleacher and students sections from both schools were both well represented. Senior leaders for both squads, Darren Miller and Derek Slywka had big nights, Miller with a game-high 33 points and Slywka with 19 points. It was the hot shooting of Nicolas Champion who hit 7 three-pointers to finish with a team high 23 and a great performance from point guard Julian Ruiz who scored 17 that was the difference as Waterloo captured their first win against Mynderse in 23 tries, with a 85-66 win.
