Cuomo says he has three goals for healthcare in New York

Codifying the state health exchange, bolstering pre-existing conditions and making prescription drugs more affordable were among the trio of health care priorities Gov. Andrew Cuomo outlined in a radio interview on Wednesday morning.

It’s not clear what Cuomo will push specifically on pre-existing conditions given the state already has a law on the books that pre-dates the Affordable Care Act, which the governor has pledged to shore up in New York amid efforts by the Trump administration to reverse the law and a federal court ruling that declared it unconstitutional.

“I laid out an agenda that thwarts them to the best way we can on every turn,” Cuomo told WAMC’s Alan Chartock.

At the same time, Cuomo’s health care outline comes as newly elected Democrats in the state Senate have pledged to back a single-payer health care program on the state level, a move the governor supports on the federal level, but has questioned the costs on the state level.

In the interview with WAMC, Cuomo said his plans for the new year are wrapped around an effort to turn back the policies of President Trump’s administration.

“I’m trying to put a legal system in place that protects our people from his policies,” Cuomo said. “He poses a series threat to New York.”
