The National Women’s Hall of Fame honored three local women Monday night.
Susan Houde-Walter, Alexis Vogt and Carol Ritter Wright received the hall’s “Keeper of the Flame” award. It honors women who are courageous, trustworthy and brave.
Ritter-Wright was a longtime reporter and columnist at the Democrat and Chronicle.
“I and my three sisters, we were told we were worthless because we were girls, and I can’t tell you how many times I was told that I would never amount to anything, because I was a girl,” she recalled. “And I decided at a pretty early age that I was going to amount to something.”
Susan Houde-Walter is an optics professor at the University of Rochester and co-founded Lasermax in Rochester.
