As the First Lady headlines a town hall on the national opioid crisis, NY-24 Congressman John Katko said it will take a multipronged approach to cut down on drug deaths.
Rep. Katko spoke to CNYCentral Wednesday from the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.
“There’s not a magic elixir here. It’s going to take a while to turn this ship around,” said Katko. “But the bottom line is it’s a multi-pronged effort. It’s got to be prevention, it’s got to be treatment, and it’s got to be law enforcement.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, opioid overdoses killed more than 49,000 people last year. Compare that to data from the National Safety Council and the FBI, and opioids killed more people than all U.S. traffic fatalities and handgun murders in 2017 combined.
