The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reports that the violent one-vehicle accident that unfolded in Butler on Tuesday happened after the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
They say Erin A. Ward, 25, of Williamson was traveling northbound on Wolcott Spring Lake Road with her son, who is 1-year-old, when she went off the roadway — missing a guard rail.
Her car then hit a tree, causing the vehicle to overturn. When first responders and deputies arrived they found a vehicle partially submerged in the ditch, where the vehicle had come to rest along the road.
Ward and Holmes were immediately extricated from the vehicle and transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Deputies determined that Ward had fallen asleep at the wheel and woke only seconds before the crash. Upon completion of that investigation Ward was ticketed or charged.
Deputies were assisted by Wolcott Fire Department, as well as Lakeshore Ambulance and Wayne County ALS.
