Bicyclist struck by SUV suffers broken back, SR 96 temporarily shut down

Deputies say that State Route 96 was shut down on Monday for approximately 30 minutes after an accident in Manchester.

Around 5:03 p.m. deputies along with Clifton Springs Ambulance and fire department responded to the intersection of Route 96 and White Spruce Lane for a personal injury accident.

The crash involved one vehicle, operated by Kimberly Walker, 61, of Clifton Springs, and a 17-year-old male operating a bicycle.

Deputies say that Fairchild was not transported to the hospital from the scene after being able to walk away under his own power. They say he didn’t appear to be seriously injured.

Walker was not cited as result of the accident due to a witness vouching that Walker attempted to safely pass Fairchild; and leaving plenty of room when Fairchild started to turn in front of her.

Upon following up with family, the bicyclist was brought to Clifton Springs Hospital for a checkover. As result of the accident, he was then transported from Clifton Springs to Strong Memorial Hospital due to breaking three bones in his back.
