WATCH THE DEBATE: Dana Balter & Rep. John Katko clash over healthcare, POTUS (video)

In their first televised debate, Republican Rep. John Katko and Democrat Dana Balter addressed issues that have plagued the country and central New York for a decade, as well as ones that arose just hours before.

CNYCentral hosted the debate between the two candidates vying for New York’s 24th Congressional District on Tuesday — exactly a week out from the midterm elections.

After a contentious campaign, the debate began with some agreement between Katko and Balter regarding the news of the day — President Donald Trump’s proposition of an executive order that would end the constitutional right to U.S. citizenship for babies of non-citizens and unauthorized immigrants born inside the country.

“The 14th Amendment to the Constitution makes it pretty clear,” Katko said. “You may be able to twist the words and find an exception, but that exception would overturn over 250 years of practice in this country.”

Balter echoed that the president doesn’t have the power himself to make that change.
